V5R1 to V5R3
I'm currently running a model 820 on V5R1 and considering a two-level upgrade to V5R3.
1. Is this possible on a model 820?
2. how does this compare to a "normal" V5R1 to V5R2 upgrade? Pros/cons, gothcha's, etc.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Not sure about the model information. We did this on a 720 - straight from V5R1 to V5R3. No real problems at all. We ended up with some application issues, but they were specific to our ERP. Otherwise the upgrade was quite smooth. We even did it in house ourselves (this is our development box). For our production boxes we're doing a RISC to RISC + OS upgrade as we're changing hardware.
If I think of anything else I'll let you know.

You should be fine, just review the Memo to Users for both V5R2 and V5R3 for any issues. For instance, there are certain hardware and software features that are no longer supported in the newer releases of OS/400.

Whether it is possible – I don’t know.
I remember a whole raft of issues being reported v5r2-v5r3 on the RPGIV Yahoo forum about 6 months ago, definitely recommend reviewing the archives – issues like removal of JDK 1.2, InfoPrint server failures, hardware no longer supported (eg. modems), CPYTOIMPF changed…..

If you use the automatic installation process pay special attention to the software agreeements preparation.
Make sure all licensed program listed in the auto install that require license agreements are noted as such before the install begins. During the auto install process the disk environment is changed before the agreements are checked and if the install process abends, you will have to reconfigure the disk settings. Have the ibm help number available just in case.
We have a model 820 that currently has 3 partitions running V5R1 on the Primary and 2nd and V5R2 on the 3rd. We are planning to upgrade all 3 to V5R3. Below is what I’ve found – Mostly off the IBM Infocenter website (for both V5R2 and V5R3.)
1. Read the Memo to Users for both releases as mentioned.
2. Be sure any IFS objects convert to TYPE 2 after the upgrade.
3. If you have a 2761, 8 port internal modem card, it must be replaced with the newer 4 port (2804 I believe) which means you’ll need an addtional IOA slot.
4. Review the PSP’s for PTF’s. You’ll also need the Software Agreement PTF’s for V5R1 and V5R2 CD (SK3T-8163-00) Apply the appropriate PTF BEFORE the upgrade – it should be included with your V5R3 Software media.
5. If you’re swapping out any LAN cards (i.e 2838′s for 2760′s) Keep in mind they do not support SNADS.
Biggest issue we had was not knowing to allocate more space for the OS before you start the actual upgrade.
After installing the Software License PTF mentioned in other replies do GO LICPGM Option 5.
From there you need to do take the options to ‘Work with licensed programs for target release’ to mark which LICPGMs should be upgraded & added and ‘Work with software agreements’ and accept all of the licenses but you also need to take the option to ‘Allocate additional space for LIC’. If you don’t the Install hangs and you have to do a manaul shutdown and restart to get the system back up.
