Using RFID tags to track mobile assets

This request for help was originally submitted to the Research Assistant on WhatIs.com. I am looking into using RFID tags to track mobile devices (laptops, Blackberrys PDA's etc) that my org gives to employee into and out of multiple campus and satellite locations. My goal is to remove the manual process of issuing laptop cards that security manually checks on exiting a building and automate the process. The idea is to also link to the Identity and Access management portal in terms of it being something that you can request from the catalogue of services.

RFID technology has been around for a while, so there are lots of vendors and technology providers worldwide. So, in an effort to be brief, let’s just focus this reply on U.S.-based providers of RFID technologies and systems (noted below).

An old ad for Dunkin Donuts has the store manager drag himself out of bed early in the morning, groaning “Time to make the doughnuts.” In the same spirit, we advise readers that, yes, it is time to redesign the database and data architecture for RFID — and to consider DB2 when they do so.
