 Using online backups for corporate disaster recovery capability

Has anyone got any experience of using (3rd party supplied) online backups as a way of creating a DR capability.  If they have, what potential risks were faced and mitigated?

Hi Patch01,

I think the approach to on-line backup's is a good one if you already have another one in place.
The first thing I usually point to someone asking me this kind of question is: Don't even think about disconnecting your current backup autoloader, tape, NAS, SAN, whatever you have.

No one should take a third party backup solution (in premises or not) and rely only on that. You should always have multiple layers of backup's.

I tend to use this approach if the costumer / budget stand for:

Primary backup: Disk imaging;
Secondary backup: Data archival
Tertiary backup: Internet / remote sync.

Online backup does not create Disaster Recovery capabilities, it can be used to facilitate a portion of it. But online backup only provides you with an offsite location where your data is stored. You will still need another location where you have spare servers and any additional hardware your applications run at some other location (Not the online backup provider, unless they also provide DR services - similar to services from a company like Sungard or IBM or AT&T, etc.).

Been using Sungard for a long time, you should into. Remember DR TESTING TESTING and testing. IF you office was gone the next day, where would you recovery site be?
