Sorry for leaving out key info (it was the lack of caffeine yesterday!)
It's a 98 machine--I know, can't help the fact that the company is cheap! The server is a Win 2003. This machine was previously used by another user and worked fine. I have tried logging in as him, carefully typing the password. I'm going to try a keyboard swap today and see if that helps.

If it is a Windows 2k/XP system, and you can logon fine to his system and his ID works on other systems then I would consider deleting his profile from that particular PC...now you should backup My Docs, Favorites etc.. prior to this, but it is possible that hi cached profile has become corrupted

If you dont get anything to work just simply delete that pc from the network and add it again to the domain! Also just check the keyboard, a lot of times a faulty keyboard can give such errors!

You r going to have to give more detail if its a more technical issue!

Good luck

Having only a half thumb on my left hand, I won't ask about typing errors. We all know of 'someone' who can't type until they have that first cup of coffee.

Most likely it is in the network setup. When you turn on the machine, It knows only what is in 'HOSTS/LMHOSTS' about network routing. You do the CTRL-ALT-Delete thing, put in a user name, password, and domain and hit enter. The computer checks for Global Catalog on a system it knows about or not finding such asks DNS for the "Domain Controller'. Gateway problems, DNS problems both can cause 'user not found'. If those are correct so a 3rd party can login from that machine (unless you have multiple accounts. NEVER assume that your administrator account is a valid test. Administrators are special and treated as such.) then the problem is Active Directory and a new user should probably be dropped and recreated.
Good Luck.

You haven't specified whether you're running NT Domain, A/D Domain, or some other authentication method.

The first thing I'd check is to see if the user might be setting the login domain to a real domain or the local system. Following up on this, try watching him/her do the login to see exactly what is happening.

What's the OS? Is there an event in the Event Viewer if it's Windows? What's the code if there is? I'd start there. If it's Unix, which I doubt, then that's a different story. Let us know a little more information and I'm sure there's an answer for ya!

Hi!
You could try to assign administrator permission to this user. Some PCs don't do what they're supposed to because of this.
Hope this helps :).
