User that is getting alot of junk mail-How can I change her email address so that she does not get mail from her old email address?
A question submitted on SearchExchange.com I have a user that is getting alot of junk mail. Our mail filter is not very good at all. Currently, the user's email address was the same as her login account, example sandy@domain.com. I added another smtp address and made it the primary and then deleted the previous email address. Users can still send email to the old address. If I go to add the old smtp address, I get an error it already exists. How can I change her email address so that she does not get mail from her old email address? I have other users that when they were created we gave them a different email address then the login name and those work. Do I have to create a new user to get this to work?

You did not mention what version of exchange you are using. Please provide those details. Thanks. That will help me know what tools you need to use. First, for this user, did you uncheck the box "automatically update email addresses based on recipient policy"? if not, the old policy will be re-applied at the next update and put the old address back. Also, did you update the recipient policy for all users to reflect the new format you want to use? If not, they will all get the old policy when the RUS runs.

The recipient policy which sets your email address is in ESM under recipients. You may or may not have more than one. We had two and the priority determines which is applied.
Make sure your policy reflects what you want all users to have. And then if you want one user to have a different email address than the policy dictates, you have to uncheck the box
automatically update email addresses based on recipient policy” on the email addresses tab for the user in Active Directory.
