Re-Apply SP2 for XP and remember to back up the existing state when prompt. I would definately do this before doing anything.

As for Flashing the bios... Wouldnt advise this at this stage. Maybee just compare the bios setting against the Laptop that is working. These issues are normally something simple. Always check the basics first, Dont Dive in the deep end.

Good Luck

Check to ensure that someone had not disabled USB

Do you have any network shares? Drives that are assigned to one notebook and not the other? Usually when shared drives are in the next available drive letter the XP wants to use, the device just does not show up, but might cause this problem.

Another poosibility is the bios. Either that laptop has an older bios version or a corrupted bios. I would flash the bios up to the current version if it isn't already. I have even flashed the bios with the same version to correct a problem. This has fixed some strange problems.

May (or may not help) but I had the same problem which was caused by the security application that came with the USB Pen. The secured partition is not the problem but the TSR from the USB manufacturer that controlled the log-in to the secure partition of the pen. "Controlled" because my "solution" was to stop using it for the XP SP2 config, the manufacturer had no update BUT your questions provokes me to go and look again. The "key" issue should be what is different between the two USB pen devices.
