USB Mass Storage Device Not Appearing in My Computer in Windows Server 2003
Hi I was recently upgraded from Windows XP to Windows Server 2003. In XP I was using a USB External HDD 2.0 High Speed, 80GB. Since Windows 2003 install it won't appear in "My Computer", it appears in Device Manager under Disk Drives with No Errors. When I unplug and re-plug it it is successfully detected and installed, it just won't appear in My Computer so I can't access it. I tried it on another developers machine to make sure it wasn't something to do with the way 2003 was set up on my PC but the problem is on his PC as well. Could someone please help me resolve this? Thanks

Answer Wiki:
are you mapping any extra drives on your machine, like login scripts, or have an extra HD or CD drive. I have the that issue also and once i removed one of the drive mapping the USB device came back to a drive letter.

Expanding on the prior response which I believe to be the correct answer, assume the following:

1) you had originally assigned drive letter F to the USB device
2) for the Server install, you assigned some other drive or mapping to drive F
3) the mapping takes priority over the USB device

Go into device manager and assign an unused drive letter to the USB device and that should fix the problem.

Hi,
Try this:

Right click on My Computer on desktop –>
Select Manage –>
This will open Computer Management mmc
Then select Storage in left panel
Under Storage search your disk in “Disk Management” or “removable storage” section.
When you find your HDD then right click on it and give it a drive letter. Then it will be displayed in your My Computer.

Hi scarydude766.

I’ve seen new Externals HDD to balls up in windows 7 64bit.
It either converts the drive to GPT AND ONLY ALLOWING to install drives for the case or P.C.B ON YOUR MACHINE. This resulting in not being able to access your Drive even though it had suuccessfully installed.

Some great tools to restore this Drive matter is to use: HDD CAPACITY RESTORE Tool.
