Q:
Networking certifications
I am currently enrolled in a Network Engineer program in Windsor, Ontario Canada. Before beginning this program I have to make a choice about entering the program just after the A+ portion and begin with Network+ or wait 3 months and start in the new year. I have spoken with admissions about my college diploma as well as my 15 years experience with computers.

An argument developed between two consellors and they decided to speak their minds. One couselor said it is too difficult to start without A+ first while the other said my previous experience and education will allow me to take A+ at the end with no worries.

The program consists of the following:

CompTIA A+ Operating Systems

CompTIA A+ Hardware

CompTia Network+

70-620 & 70-622: Microsoft Windows Vista Client Configuration

Blackberry Support Specialist

MCITP: Server Administrator

70-640 Active Directory

70-642 Windows Network Infrastructure

70-646 Windows Server Adminstrator

Scripting with Windows Powershell

Virtualization Technology

CompTIA Linux+

70-236 MS Exchange Server 2007

BlackBerry Certified System Administrator

BlackBerry Certified Server Support Specialist

70-431 MS SQL Server 2005

The program is 50 weeks in length and includes 14 exam vouchers. Has anyone out there taken a program similar to this and would you agree with my thinking that if I can't pass the rest of this on its own then it really doesn't matter when A+ is administered. I need to know before investing $20,000.

You can pass the Network+ without a background in A+. Personally, I don't see much use for an A+ if you have 15 years of experience.

I agree…furthermore, with 15 years experience I’m not convinced that all these certs are really going to help - especially for that price. There lots of other IT career considerations that will help more than any degree or certification.
