upgrading from oracle 8i to oracle 9i from windows 2000 server to windows server 2003
Hello everyone,

I am a newbie. I am currecntly trying to assess the risks involved in trying to upgrade a windows 2000 server to server 2003 version. This a real time database server with oracle 8i and is running on windows 2000 version. I have read in one of your reponses that 8i is not supported on win 2003 server. The least it requires is 9.2 and above versions of oracle. Elseweher it is said that 9.2 is unsupported as well and hence it is good idea to go 10g/11g. Since win 2000 is soon going to be unsupported by Microsoft it is of paramount imp to upgarde the srevre to 2003. My question is how best or least risk is it to upgrade to 9i? is there similarities between 8i and 9i or will be a completely unsupported? Any suggestion will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Regards,

Kavya

Are you upgrading your hardware or just trying to upgrade the OS on the same hardware?

You might want to upgrade to something a little newer than the 7 year old version of Windows. There have been two server releases since Windows 2003 was released. If you go to Windows 2003 you’ll be doing this again in a year or two. If you go to Windows 2008 or Windows 2008 R2 then you’ll have years before you have to worry about it again.

These will all involve major database version upgrades as well so you’ll have a lot of planning and testing to do before you can upgrade.
