Can anyone point me to some good information about upgrading an HMC?    I am getting ready to perform my first of many HMC upgrades and would like to be able to review the documewntation and get some pointers concerning upgrading from a release below V6.1.3 to V7.3.4.

Software/Hardware used:
IBM iSeries HMC 3550 7310

Thanks. We'll let you know when a new response is added.

Based on IBM documentation the E35510A2 issues was corrected in service pack 1. However when I did my upgrade I installed Service pack 3. Did IBM re-introduce the issue with Service Pack 3?

If you follow the instructions from IBM, it's pretty straightforward. I'd recommend that you save the upgrade data and the critical console data before starting and again when you've finished. It can save you quite a lot of trouble. You may be able to do some leap-frogging on the releases rather than having to load each and every one - you'll need to review the prerequisites. Don't forget to load the PTFs (or whatever it is they call them for the HMC) - they can be a pain to find on IBM's site, but they're definitely important. The nice thing about upgrading the HMC is that your iSeries doesn't have to be down - even if the HMC goes walkies your users shouldn't know anything's going on.

I am running into conflicting information concerning the path for upgrading the HMC. Some of the information I've reviewed leads me to believe I can go directly from V6.1.2 to V7.3.5 but then one document I reviewed is saying that I must do a stepped upgrade from V6.1.2 to V6..1.3 then to V7.3.5. This is really confusing and I'm not sure which direction to go.

We're at 7.3.5, but we didn't go directly from 6.1.2 to 7.3.5. If you want to be safe, take it up to 6.1.3 then make the jump to 7.3.5. It'll take a bit longer (and I recommend you save the upgrade data and the critical console data after each release) but it's pretty automated so you shouldn't have to spend all of your time hovering over the server.

Should I have any concerns with the server(HMC) being in a stand alone state. The HMC is currently not attached to any iSeries. The one I am working on is a spare which we will be attaching to an HA system in about 2 weeks. This is my first bout with an HMC upgrade/Update, I've done tons of iSeries and AS/400 upgrades both hardware and software and several CISC to RISC, but this is a first.

I'd think the standalone state of the HMC would be an advantage - no worries about hosing a managed system. You should be fine, though. Follow the instructions & don't panic.

The Update to V6.1.3 and Upgrade to V7.3.5 went pretty smooth. However I have a couple of serviceable events that are showing up. #1 - E33510A2 License Internal Code has detected a problem - Failing MTMS: 7310- CR4/1010F9B #2 - E3D4310A License Internal Code has detected a problem - Failing MTMS: 7310- CR4/1010F9B #3 & 4 are the same and I believe they are due to the HMC being stand alone with no Network connection or system connected. B3003000E - HMC ssurveillance detected no networking available - Failing MTMS (the iSeries name and Serial #) I haven;t been able to find much information concerning the E303000E and E3D4310A codes.

I'd get the fixes installed - if the LIC errors persist give IBM a call. I'm not finding much on IBM's site about MTMS, this is about typical of what came up on a search.
