Upgrading from Windows 2000 server to Windows 2003

My company is currently running on a Windows 2000 server, we are looking to upgrade to a Windows 2003 server. I believe that we have a wonderful IT person who is honest and is offering a great price, however, I'm getting some push-back on the number of hours it takes to Upgrade the system. For those of you who work in the IT industry, my questions are these: How long does it take to upgrade the system, with approximately 20 users and make it HIPAA compliant for the medical industry? And how many hours on average does it take to maintain a Windows Server 2003 Network Infastructure, as well as, reasonable charges?

This rate can vary greatly depending on various factors. Some factors are the region you are located where rates are high in NY, LA as compared to Taylor, Nebraska. The expertise of the individual does affect your rate as well. Are you planning on upgrading the existing hardware from 2000 to 2003 or is there another server that will have 2003 installed and then integrated into your infrastructure. Are your clients at minimum 2000 Professional or do you have some legacy 95/98 systems. That's a factor. For your size of environment, I would give a flat fee so it protects you from "overage" of hours due to issues occurring with the upgrade process but it protects the IT individual as well.

You sound like a small shop with 1-2 Servers with your 20 users. I've seen an upgrade for this type of environment performed as quickly as 2 days (with no issues) and as long as 5 days (whole business week with issues).

Thank you so much for your response. We are located in Florida, in the Tampa Bay area. We only have one server right now, so we will be looking to upgrade the 2000 to the 2003. We are a fairly small group being as we are an LLC and have different divisions. Everyone is running Windows 2000 or higher which is a plus. Our IT person proposed a Monthly Contract that would cover the upgrade (less the parts and software) that I think is reasonable. However, some in our group were questioning the number of hours it would take to decide hourly/contract. I think we should do the contract all the way. Thank you so much for your help.
