What has to happen before I can do an upgrade from Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2008? I have a new server if necessary but would like to perform an upgrade. This is running on a Windows 2003 server.

Thanks. We'll let you know when a new response is added.

I am guessing you mean Exchange 2007. The only thing you have to do is build out your Exchange 2007 server. Once that is built you can move users’ mailboxes to the new server. Here is a good guide for you.

You will need to clarify if you mean Exchange 2007 or 2010. There is no Exchange 2008.

There is no upgrade path, per se, from 2003 to a later version of Exchange, as there has been in the past. For Exchange 2007 and later, you need a 64-bit environment. Prior to doing the migration, outlined below. read all you can as the administration interface is quite different from previous versions of Exchange. It should also answer most, if not all your questions. Start learning PowerShell. 1. Obtain a server capable of running a 64-bit OS--most do these days. 2. Install Windows server 2008 64-bit or Windows server 2008 R2, join it to the domain, update your AD schema with 2008 AD if you are going have this new server as a DC, and install AD. 3. Install other roles as appropriate. 4. Install needed features. 5. Install Exchange 2007 server SP3. 6. Install all available patches. 7. Replicate Public Folders from earlier version. 8. after ensuring PF replication is complete, move mailboxes. 9. Decommission older Exchange server & uninstall.
