Upgrading Exchange 5.5 to 2003
Hello all,
Here is my situation. I have 2 domains. domain1 (w2k3) is our current domain (all clients authenticate to this domain) Domain2 (w2k) is a domain which has our exchange server (5.5) in it. (No current trust relationship between domains..got thrown into this mess did not create it) What I am trying to do is bring up a new exchange 2003 server in domain1 and then migrate mailboxes to the domain. I have created a trustrelationship between the 2 domains. Ran Forestprep and domainprep, installed ADC, and ran the exchange setup. I have tried selecting join and exisiting exchange 5.5 org but it does not see my 5.5 server in domain2. Server does not exist error. I tried selecting create first org option and then using ADC tools to create the connection but that errors out saying "servername is not an exchange 5.5 server or an SRS service" I beleive that I have set up the correct permissions. I have given admin account from domain1 access to resources on domain2. The trustrelation is there...logged in to domain1 I can access resources on the DC for domain2. I'm not sure if I am missing something...Help.

Hello,
I'll take a stab it this one...It sounds like your running an AD domain in native mode with a functioning Exchange 5.5 server in the mix. Since the Exchange 5.5 server is not AD compliant, your new Exchange 2003 server is not recognizing it as a peer.
Try taking your new Exchange server off line so as not to confuse things, and upgrade your existing 5.5 server to Exchange 2003. Remember you'll need to upgrade the server OS from 2000 to 2003 as well. Exchange 2003 does not play well with Server 2000. Once you've completed the upgrade and tested your box, add your new Exchange 2003 server in domain1 to the organization. You should be able to see the server in domain2 now and proceed with your migration.

Thanks for the response. The one major thing I forgot to mention (sorry) is that we are also upgrading to a new server. The current server that the exchange 5.5 is on is being decommissioned. So our plan was to bring a new server up in domain1 install exchange 2003, create a trust relations with domain2 (w2k with the exchange 5.5 server) use the ADC to create a connection between the 2 exchange servers and then migrate mailboxes and public folders. From the deployment guide this seemed like our best solution. Unfortunately it has been a giant headache! Any help is greatly appreciated!!!!!
