You need to prepare the schema for AD 2003 on the existing domain.

You run 'adprep /forestprep'. Then 'adprep /dcprep'. You find 'adprep' on the 2003 Server CD. It is good practice to run 'dcdiag' and 'netdiag' beforehand to make sure everything is clean.

Once this is done, you'll be ready to install AD (dcpromo) on a fresh 2003 member server.

For more info, do a search on 'adprep', you should get lots of detailed info.
