Hi I am getting ready to upgrade server from 2000 to 2003. At the moment I have 2 DC running 2000 and Exchange 2003. We have purchased new server and would like to install win 2003 on it, join it to the domain as member server, install active directory on it, then transfer the roles from my current win 2000 dc to new 2003 server. Should I perhaps install 2000 on it first, transfer the roles from my current 2000 dc to it and then upgrade to 2003. Any help will be appriciated a lot

Hello,

I don’t see any problems adding a Windows Server 2003 DC to an existing W2k AD domain. Build your new server, set it up as a DC and get it replicating. When your ready move the appropriate FSMO roles to the new server.

Good luck!

You need to prepare the schema for AD 2003 on the existing domain. You run 'adprep /forestprep'. Then 'adprep /dcprep'. You find 'adprep' on the 2003 Server CD. It is good practice to run 'dcdiag' and 'netdiag' beforehand to make sure everything is clean. Once this is done, you'll be ready to install AD (dcpromo) on a fresh 2003 member server. For more info, do a search on 'adprep', you should get lots of detailed info.
