Windows Server 2008
At present we are running a Windows 2008 Server which has Sharepoint 2007 installed and houses our exchange server.  Apparently only the Express version of SQL server was installed initially and now the 4GB database limit is affecting our intranet.

Have been advised that we need to update to SQL Server 2008 and what I would like advice on is do we have to install SQL server 2005 first, then upgrade to SQL 2008? Can we still run Sharepoint 2007 and our Exchange system on the same server with the upgrade or would it be better to install the SQL 2008 on a new server?

As this is going to cost anything from AU$12K to AU$17K, which is alot for a not for profit organisation, I need to know the best solution.

Many thanks in advance for any information you can give.

Thanks. We'll let you know when a new response is added.

Look at the WorkGroup edition of SQL Server. Its a little bit cheaper and it doesn’t have the database size limit.

You can upgrade from SQL 2005 Express to SQL 2008 Workgroup (or higher) directly. You don’t need to upgrade from SQL 2005 Express to SQL 2005 standard first.

If you want you can upgrade to SQL 2005 Workgroup or higher easily. Just run the installer for the new edition with the /SKUUPGRADE switch. If you don’t have a reason to upgrade the version of SQL Server you probably shouldn’t without a lot of testing.

As a non-profit you might be able to get some decent pricing from Microsoft. Check with your local sales Microsoft rep.
