Is it possible to add new messages to System i message files from a CL or RPG program?  Instead of manually updating each file with the wrkmsgf command.

Thanks. We'll let you know when a new response is added.

The ADDMSGD is the command thaty is used to add a new message to a *MSGF.
You could write a routine using that command

The ADDMSGD command can add message descriptions to message files. The CHGMSGD command can change attributes of an existing message description. The RTVMSG command can be used in a CL program to retrieve the attributes of an existing message description. But it's not clear how much good any of those will do for you. Entering changes into source code, or perhaps even a driver file, would seem to be about the same amount of work as entering the same values directly through either WRKMSGF or WRKMSGD. Usually, I'd see this kind of programming best suited for distributing new or changed message descriptions to multiple remote systems. It would seem to be fairly specialized activity. Tom

Thanks for the info. After 12 years in this business I've never had the need for any of this. Nice to know the tools are there when I need them.
