Logical Files
I have seen one topic here before which saying that join logical file can be updated and it has been many years. But I have tried to update a join logical file either using DFU or STRSQL.Neither succeed. Could someone help on this? Thanks a a lot.

Thanks. We'll let you know when a new response is added.

You should be updating the physical files.

As of V5R4, the topic you need to review is <a href=”http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/iseries/v5r4/index.jsp?topic=/sqlp/rbafyinsteadofsql.htm”>INSTEAD OF SQL triggers</a>. Quote from the topic: “An INSTEAD OF trigger allows a view, which is not inherently insertable, updatable, or deletable, to be inserted into, updated, or deleted from.”

Naturally, if the trigger function has not yet been defined, you won’t be able to perform the UPDATEs against the VIEW with DFU, SQL nor anything else.

Right Tom, With the Instead of SQL trigger, it will appear from the application side, DFU, or SQL that the Join file is being updated but in reality the trigger logic that you create will be updating the underlying physical files. Phil
