Problem resolved with IOS upgrade. I had all the correct info in the config. I had VTY password and was able to telnet to the device from the same subnet. Debugging showed that the switch wasn't processing anything when telnet sessions were remote. Debug looked fine locally. Went to the latest IOS and problem resolved. Didn't see anything in the buglist on Cisco so thought that upgrading couldn't hurt.

Thanks all.

Do you have a firewall infront of your switch? If so is it NATed?
When you telnet to it remotely does it close the connection immediately or does it run for a few moments before finally timing out?
Have you checked the logs on the switch to see what errors it might spit out after trying to log into it remotely?

The answers might help us find the answer to your problem,
