Unable to remove unnamed group and contacts from Lotus Sametime contact list

I have a Lotus Sametime user who has added people to his Instant Contact list -- he has left the "Add to private group" field blank. Now he has an unnamed group containing several contacts. He has also noticed that he is unable to remove contacts from this unnamed group from the list. He is able to select "Remove" and answer "Yes" to the "are you sure..." prompt, but the names are never removed. What do I have to do to remove this unnamed group?
