Unable to Launch File Attachment

I have a select group of users (about 5) using a specific piece of software (Maind Manager) that they have installed locally on thier PC's. The application is defined in the OS (WinXP) under the 'Folder Options' and 'File Types' with the extensions defined. However, when they email each other attachments, they can't launch them from within the Notes (R5.0.11) client. If they detach the file it launches without a problem. Is there somewhere else that Notes would be looking to associate the extension to the proper application? The message they receive is: Sorry, an application to open this document cannot be found. Thanks!!

Thanks. We'll let you know when a new response is added.

Notes does have it’s own set of ‘viewers’ built in. When you view an attachment the Notes client uses those ‘sub-programs’ or plug ins for lack of the proper term.

When you open an attachment, however, it should use the native operating system default program… i.e. for a document MS Word might launch.

I find it curious that your clients are not doing that. Perhaps there is a property setting I am unaware of somewhere in their R5 client. You might ask them if they are using the ‘View’ button, and suggest they use ‘Open’ or [forgive me I have been on 6.5 for a while] whatever the open attachment option is and use that instead.

Good luck with it.

I think that Notes add some settings to the notes.ini file when it is installed that reflect other file types. These are clusted together in the ini file and start with view and edit. You can try reinstalling notes on one of the clients. Before doing that copy the notes.ini file to another name. Edit the original ini file to have only the first two lines, saveand reinstall notes. Once installed, test launching an attachment forthe new application. If it does work, check the new notes.ini file for additional view and edit entries that are not in the save version. Copy anyadditioanl lines to the ini file of the affected users.

You don't say what file extension this program's file are. It may be that this file extension conflicts somehow with Notes and results in that message. I've also seen it where the file association with some files gets "lost" on the PC somehow. Usually reinstalled rebuilds the links, though from what you say the associations are there.

This has to be a problem with the Mind Manager registry settings. I have no problem opening a mind manager file (*.mmp) when it is attached to a notes document. I would contact Mind Manager support. I had to call them once and they were tremendously responsive and helpful ... Mindjet Technical Support at support@mindjet.com.
