For whatever reason I have been unable to resolve this problem. I've been trying for a few weeks -- different mice, trying to find a setting somewhere but to no avail. I can highlight both in explorer windows and on the desktop using the old click-and-drag box, however I am not able to drag the icons. I've tried two different mice, although they were both ps/2 (no USB mice here at work for me to try.) Any ideas would be pretty awesome.

Is the desktop set for “Auto arrange”? (Right click on desk top then slide over the “arrange by” arrow.)
If it is it will seem that when you click and drag an icon, it won’t stay where you put it. To “fix” this click on the check mark by auto arrange, and that should allow you to arrange the icons.

What Flame suggests was the first thing to come to my mind when I first read the question, but since Galucio said the problem was also present when trying to drag icons in windows explorer, I am not sure about this. When you cannot change icons position due to the 'auto arrange' setting, you can drag the icons (and you see it), but when you drop them, they go back to their previous position, so hmmm, let's wait Galucio's response. Regards,

Thanks guys. No, it will not auto-arrange. When I hold click and drag, I do not see the file/shortcut being dragged. No 'ghost image' of the item shows up under my cursor, the cursor does not change. It acts like I'm moving the mouse with no button held.

Rather, it is not set to auto-arrange. All else in the above post applies.

It will be interesting to know if a usb mouse solve the problem. There is something else I would try: In control panel go to "mouse" and turn on the "switch primary and secondary buttons" setting, and see what happens. Any change ? the left button works now but not the right one ? It could also be a problem on your ps2 port...

As of this moment, I don't have access to a USB mouse. I'll try to bring one in tomorrow to test, however I don't have one here at work to try. I also tried the 'switch buttons' situation. Same problem. I tried, too, the 'click lock' feature and after playing with it to learn how to do it, it didn't help my situation either. It sounds like software -- I can get the 'click lock' to work and essentially hold the mouse button down for me when I drag a selection box on the desktop, however it won't drag an icon either in explorer or on the desktop. I should note that 'auto arrange' and 'sort by' etc DO work. The icons are not stuck, they just cannot be dragged.
