When you attempt to create the mailbox for exchange 2003 do you get an error? If so what does the error say exactly? Are there errors in the event logs you can post?

When it is creating the mailbox, it claims it is successful - however I have seen some messages in the Application Log - I am trying again to see if I can get these to repeat and will add them to this discussion if I do.

This is the only error message (not actually an error, it’s a warning from MSExchangeMTA) since I have tried to re-create the mailbox:
An interface error has occurred. An MtaBindBack over RPC has failed. Locality Table (LTAB) index: 72, Windows 2000/MTA error code: 1722. Comms error 1722, Bind error 0, Remote Server Name STA-GP-EXCHANGE, Protocol String ncacn_ip_tcp:STA-GP-EXCHANGE.statravelgroup.com[4286] [BASE IL INCOMING RPC 28 507] (14)
The DNS registered address mentioned is actually the external one (this is the old Exchange 5.5 server - a historical mis-configuration)
I’m not sure this is related at all - I was getting these before, there’s nothing else and the mailbox was created over an hour ago now…

You say that, “we do not appear to be able to create a mailbox.” What do you mean by “appear”? Do you get a message or failure when you create the mailbox? Or do you create the mailbox, get no error and then not “see” the mailbox in the Exchange System Manager?
If it is the latter, the mailbox does not show up in System Manager until you open the mailbox using Outlook. If this is the case, open the mailbox on a client using Outlook, then you will “see” the mailbox in System Manager.

It is the latter, but we are unable to open it in Outlook as it cannot resolve the user when attempting to connect the mailbox. We are aware that unless you either send the mailbox a message, or open the mailbox in Outlook, it does not appear in System Manager. The problem is that the user information is never generated at all (no e-mail addresses are automatically generated). If we create the mailbox using the Exchange 5.5 tools on our Exchange 5.5 server, then migrate it across to the Exchange 2003 server, there are no issues - hence my original question whether this is normal behaviour in mixed mode.

Then you are not having a mailbox creation issue, you are having a mailbox connectivity issue. Try going into Mail control panel applet, remove any mail profiles and create a new mail profile for the user.

If we are not having a mailbox creation issue, why does the user not appear in a list of users that can be added during browsing (I have 7 users with exchange as their first name in display - the user in question does not appear so I only see 6 if I type “exchange” and click on “Check Name”), why can I not send the user a mail message before the mailbox is listed in System Manager?
