Unable to backup sql database.

the full error that I am receiving is Backup- \usfshk3ap09.edcllc.netD: DataAn unknown or unexpected database error occurred while attempting a DBCC. The file name "C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL$SHAREPOINTDataSTS_Config.mdf " is too long to create an alternate stream name.

    Part of the problem is that you are trying to backup the database files while SQL Server is in use. This can't be done as the files are locked to prevent anyone else from accessing them. Instead use the native BACKUP DATABASE command to create SQL Backup files. You can then backup these files using your backup software. The only way to get a usable backup of the database files them selves would be to stop the SQL Service then backup the files then restart the database. However the application which uses the database (Sharepoint in this case) wouldn't work while the backup is running. Most backup software includes a SQL Backup Agent, however these licenses usually cost extra.
