What is the job specification of a typical system/network Administrator in a small compamy having 10 servers, ( file/ Database) and 100 users? If any experienced sys admin joins this type of company, how he can proceed to his daily work if the company is newly formed ?

well for me honestly, I started out without any knowledge on how to handle system and network administration but as time passed, I learned them one by one. I’m now on this position for 5 years now. So far so good. Just go to the basics. Know where to start and when do do it. You should scrutinize everything from it’s very roots…Good luck!

    He would surely be there just for escalation. You should have a helpdesk person with password reset abilities etc and have a sys admin to deal with all the other problems, as well as perform your system maintenance/upgrades etc. 10 servers seems a pretty cushy number for 100 users - with that low a demand on them you shouldn't have to worry about them frying, as long as you built the system correctly.

    Having started out as a sys admin in the 80's, the concept for small businesses today is how to manage cost effectively. With the environment that you described, I would do the cost analysis regarding a regular employee and outsourcing to a local consulting group/consultant (individual)/IT services company. In an environment that you describe, I was the CTO of a company that had that exact configuration. We found that the economics were best justified by outsourcing and for most of the minor daily issues there were enough computer and network savey people to help one another out. Especially if parameters were set for helping and an escalation procedure was established. Botton line, look at the what that person will be doing to fill a 40 hour work week. Is there enough new system setup, user training, server management, network setup, cable pulling, network architecture and engineering and so on. Then determine the most cost effective way to get those service accomplished so that your data in maintained and your users and management is satisfied.

    I think it depends on the company and the 100 users...and how dependant they are on and how effectively they can use IT/network/technology resources. For example, where I am at, the network and its servcies are an integral part of day to day business. If one of our key services goes down for even say 5 min. The phones start ringing and it can have an affect, even though we're a small company of only 140 people or so. However, where my wife is, their attitude is if someone turned the network OFF, it would probably take the users a week to even notice - they just have that kind of environment. Technology just isn't stressed or used to it's potential there. You can however, have the ability to dictate how/what the company does with respect to IT, all depends on how 'forward' you are and what kind of 'environment' you create and put forth.

    You have to have your IT policy,what users do,what the management can do,what the IT dept does.IT dept tasks,Preventive mantenance,Backups,maintenance,Disaster recovery,departmentals,password handling,server management,system management,the various network platforms and how they coincide,desktop management,storage management. If yu plan and set most of these basics,thats just the beginning,then how the tasks are operating and eficiency of the IT system,IT staff,IT users.Evaluate if the IT system is meeting business needs (you have to justify that you are there). Then monitoring of all these areas,intrusion detection (logical and physical). Virus detection.Elimination,Security in all areas of your system. Upgrades of software and hardware (if required)thats OS and applications. Hey the list can go on but you just have to be focus so when you leave an area that you have prepared the next time you come and check on the procedures you're at a next stage (cause in IT you don't want to start dragging on one task) Regards Newton

    In addition to the other replies, as an experienced network admin, I would stress a few points here that are often overlooked by the 'shoot from the hip' crowd. -Backup and recovery strategies... make sure you are not only backing up os and user data, but run tests to make sure you can RESTORE the data or os! Downtime and lost data costs $$$. -Virus and intrusion detection, invest in good tools and monitor them. Do you have a gateway/isp to the internet? You need to run a NAT firewall at the least, or something like Checkpoint FW-1 or Cisco PIX at the most. -Establish an intranet/internet usage policy. Are people visiting sites and downloading stuff they shouldn't and using up your bandwidth (making legitimate users slowdown)? You can't enforce anything if there is no policy! -Are your servers physically secure, with only the administrator with local login capabilities? With 100 users, you can potentially have a few bad apples, or someone who knows just enough to be dangerous and end up bringing down your whole network with an 'oops, I tried this while you were out'.
