Transferring video files from my camcorder to my laptop

Hello so I have a JVC GY-DV500U camcorder and I'm trying to figure out how to connect it to my laptop. I'm understanding I use the DV port, right? Which is 4 pin. My laptop doesn't have a DV port. So otherwise I would have to use the USB but using a firewire to USB simply doesn't work. Do I use a USB adapter that has a DV port, if so I'm trying to figure out what kind? Or if there's a better way to do this. Also specifically what kind of wire do I need? Thank you so much!

Not sure, but connect your camcorder to the laptop using USB. Open the flip screen of camcorder & select playback on your laptop. Hopefully, it can recognize the equipment as a new hardware/drive letter. Try to locate the name like sd_video folder (or whatever it is) to find the video clips, which are probably .mod format. Now import the file(s) to the video editing software. If it doesn't recognize, there is a setup CD/DVD with this JVC camcorder, which may necessary to install. A common problem as a lot of laptops don't have the same upgrade capabilities if you are lacking a connection. What brand and model laptop? I've read a lot of forums and nobody seems to have a proven solution yet.

it's a dell laptop slightly newer, and runs win 7. I've read a lot of forums about it too and no ones been successful connecting directly from the camera to the usb port, you have to have some sort of adapter I think

Either you have camcorder's instruction manual for how to transfer videos. Just try to follow this manual. Now it is needed a DC cable to transfer videos, while a USB cable helps to transfer still images only. Install the JVC software that likely comes with this item onto your computer. Now connect the DV cable to your computer before attaching it to your camcorder. Now play on the computer and await the transfer of the video files.
