Time to Live


Ping, IP address, Network

If you ping a pc in a LAN the TTL value is 128 whereas if you ping a pc from one network to another network the TTL value decreases from 255 to 254. My question is why the TTL value is 128 in a LAN.

The standard TTL value set by windows is 128. More than likely when you are pinging across networks the TTL is set by your router and that is where the 255-254 is coming from. I am not 100% on this though. Anyone else out there with more networking background familiar with this?
