The ipconfig cmd is not working on my XP desktop operating system from the dos window.

hHello to all. I need to know how to get my ipconfig cmd to work. It has not been working for at least the last 6 months. I am wondering if I am missing a necessary file? Is there any other way I can test for my ip? Thank you in advance for any help you have.

Make sure that %SystemRoot%system32 is in your environment variables path. Also make sure that the file
ipconfig.exe is located in the system32 directory. If not you can copy it and the other ipconfig.* files from a different xp machine.

Are you getting any error messages when you try to run ipconfig? If you’re getting the message “‘Ipconfig’ is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file”, then your issue may be a path issue as davemudgett suggests. Another error may mean you have a different issue.
Make sure your Network Interface Card is installed properly (reload drivers if necessary), and enable TCP/IP in your network connections properties, which can be found under the control panel. If you JUST want to check your ip address, you an find it in the same properties window.
Make sure you account has adminstrative priviliges.
with windows XP if you do not have an ethernet connection on the wire you will get 0.0.0.0 so make sure you have your cable connected.

I am getting the message “‘Ipconfig’ is not recognized as an internal or external command”. This happens as well when I attempt to ping, tracert, ect. I will check the systemroot path as suggested and see if that will correct the problem. If not, then I will go down the list of the suggestions left by others. Thank you again for your response to my question!

Although sometimes considered a security vulnerability (especially in a Corporate environment), the fact that “ping” tracert” etc… are also not available leads me to suspect that “simple tcp/ip services” may not be activated or possibly not installed.
Although the article referenced below details how to UNINSTALL the services, it can also be used to install them as well…

Remove the spyware/adware/malware from your computer and then reinstall tcpip. It is not a totally uncommon problem. There are a few good retail scanner out there, research or demo them. The reinstall of tcpip has been addressed so follow those instructions or d/l the tool to do it for you.
