Antivirus use filter drivers tha installs in the network stack and requires a complete uninstall to desable them. just stopping the servicess will not do it. Remove it, reboot and test.

No firewall between me and the server – this is all internal.

No errors in the event log of the SMTP server or the server attempting to send the messsage.
