 Telnet SMTP Connection Hangs
We have a strange issue going on here - one of the servers on our domain is having issues sending email via our SMTP server. I can connect to the SMTP server using telnet, but it will not let me enter any command and will eventually drop the connection. All other servers are able to connect without issue. The STMP server is running Exchange 2003 and the server that is having issues connecting is running Server 2003 Standard. We have a server running Exchange 2000 that will be retired soon, and the problematic server has no issues connecting to that one using telnet.

Software/Hardware used:
Windows 2003 Server Standard, MS Exchange 2003

Is there any firewalling taking place between you and the server? Any errors in the Windows event log?

Kevin,

No firewall between me and the server – this is all internal.

No errors in the event log of the SMTP server or the server attempting to send the messsage.

Thanks,

Jeff

your antivirus could be blocking you from accessing the port. Antivirus use filter drivers tha installs in the network stack and requires a complete uninstall to desable them. just stopping the servicess will not do it. Remove it, reboot and test.
