There is an IBM redbooks publication called "TCP/IP Tutorial and Technical Overview", in which you can find a very clear explanation on subnetting with examples, and many other TCP/IP concepts.
You can read it on-line <a href="http://www.redbooks.ibm.com/redbooks/GG243376/wwhelp/wwhimpl/js/html/wwhelp.htm">here</a>, or you can download it in pdf format <a href="http://www.redbooks.ibm.com/redbooks/pdfs/gg243376.pdf">here</a>.

Any good TCP/IP resource should be sufficient to confuse you initially.
here is another good resource <a href="http://www.tcpipguide.com/free/t_IPSubnetAddressingSubnettingConcepts.htm">Link</a>
also this from Microsoft: <a href="http://download.microsoft.com/download/9/4/6/946958ef-7b86-4ddc-bfdb-c7ed2af4ce51/TCPIP_Fund.pdf">Link</a>
One of the best publications I have found is the Cisco BCSN book I struggled with subnetting until I found this and it really helped me.

Here is an on-line <a href="http://www.subnetmask.info/">subnet calculator</a> the page also has some other really handy network tools as well. It is from my "Handy Hacks" Favorites Folder.
