Noob to AD here, trying to solve a problem. Any help is greatly appreciated.

[strong]Can you assign access to a network shared folder based on a computer’s group membership?[/strong]

I originally created a script that assigns a shared network folder (Drive S) according to user group membership, BUT some users work in different departments and each of those depts have their own specific shared folder. Besides the conflict of using the same drive letter for different shared folders (Drive S), I only want the users to see the shared folder (Drive S) used by that particular dept.

So, I tried assigning share folder permissions based on COMPUTER rather than USER membeship to a group (the logic being the script would apply only to computers belonging to a specific group and all users logging on to that computer would only pickup the relevant shared folder, and not every other shared folder the user has access to) but I can’t get it to work.

Currently running a Win 2003 server for dc and client pc’s are win 2k and win xp. Users just recently migrated from vt terminals to pc and have very limited knowledge/experience using pc’s. I want to keep it simple for the users; so, I’ve decided to assign Drive S for all network shared folders.

I sincerely apologize if the answer turns out to be a simple one, but I’m new to this and even after extensive research, have hit a wall. Many thanks to all.

I have a server running Windows 2003 standard with a folder that is being shared. On this share I have limited the User Limit to one user. I have done this by going to the properties of the share, under the general tab, User Limit section, Allow this number of users: and set to 1. When I have someone map a drive to this folder it uses that one access point and blocks all others from access it. Problem is, that as long as they don’t open any files, I can’t find a way to see what user has that share in use. The only time I can see who is in the share is by seeing them having file open. One other item worthy of mentioning is that I have also accessed this share through a DFS path as well. Doesn’t seem to matter which way you access it, I still can’t see who has the share in use when they don’t have any files open. Does anyone have a Windows command to see this?

We have a public folder on one of the data servers in our domain. Everyone has read access to this folder and many have write access as well. In this public folder there is also our MIS_Notes folder. The MIS_Notes Folder is accessible only by those in the Administrator group. The folder is visible to anyone who opens the public folder. It gives an “access restricted error” to anyone who is not a member of the admin group (which is a good thing!) Is there a way to hide this folder from those NOT in the admin group?

The server is running Windows Server 2003 R2 Standard X64 Edition.
Thanks!
