I’m looking to put together a server to run ESXi v4.1. I’ve selected the following hardware components and would appreciate any advice/input good/bad:

Case: Athena Power CA-SWH02BH7

Mobo: TYAN S8230GM4NR-DL

PSU: Athena Power AP-P4ATXK110FEP

CPU: AMD Opteron 6134 Magny-Cours 2.3GHz

64gig RAM: Kingston 8GB KVR1333D3E9SK2/8G x 8

2 500gig drives – RAID1: This partition will have a vm for Win2k8 file/print server.

4 1tb drives – RAID10: This partition will run a vm DEV/Test environment for a SQL Server and Web Server(s).

Is live migration included in free VMware ESXi?

I’ve installed ESXi 4 on a 40gb ATA drive. I’ve also added two 1tb Hitachi SATA drives using the controller on an ASUS M4A785-M motherboard. How do I format those two drive to make them available as datastores for virtual machines?

NIC Bridging on VM problem

I have a ESXI 4.0 host with 4 nics setup for teaming (fault tolerance and load balancing). I have 2 vms setup on the host, when I setup bridging using 2 or more nics on the vm, the bridge nic shows bytes sent but 0 bytes received and the physical nics show sent bytes 0 and bytes being received. I am not using a vswitch and there is only 1 vlan, I understand bridging is not necessary, but my understanding is it should work.

Is a vswitch necessary for this to work or some other special configuration?
