Virtualization in 2010 Questions

How to setup private/public networks on VMWare
Like to connect one NIC card to a public switch so everyone can access that server, and another NIC connects to a private switch (network) to access the private network. Right now after install ESXi 4, only the pubic link works. Anything I need to configure in VMWare to make it work? Thanks! -Steve

Small Business Server 2008
Does anyone know if there will be an R2 version of Small Business Server 2008? Most of our customers fall into the SMB category, with the emphasis on Small. Our organization pretty much functions as the complete IT department for these companies. Because of cost and features, they are all running one version or another [...]

Is there a way to virtualize such that applications can be installed in virtualization layers over a core system?
Sometimes I need to install a particular setup for testing… I’ve used virtual machines for this. The ease of compartmentalizing the installation of unstable software and drivers made me wonder if there is a straightforward way to generate a new virtualized layer of my own machine, whenever I want to install a collection of potentially [...]

What’s a good backup/bare-metal restore/virtualization enterprise software?
I’d like to (hopefully) find a single software solution that does: - traditional backup/restore to a central server of other systems on the LAN - allows you to image for bare-metal restores - allows you to image to virtualizable machines Tried out Symantec’s System Recovery and had a horrible experience with the product and their [...]

Have you compared VMWare vs Hyper-V for your organization’s virtualization solution?
I am thinking about this within the context of a small rural nonprofit hospital that had three new, identical servers running Server 2008 that was primarily hosting their Exchange email server. They were virtualized with ESXi 3.5 but they did not have a management solution and there was no shared storage (SAN). Money (budget) was [...]

I need to configure the development environment in a VM, cloning it in 3-4 copies. I thought to use VMware server on a Windows XP host and to build 3-4 client (scalable dimension). Each machine needs 2 GB Ram and dual core CPU. I’ll use this lab in my intranet. Is the VMware license free [...]

For typically small (departmental) environments consisting of 5 physical PC servers (more or less) running departmental applications, what would be the best server consolidation approach ? Is server/application virtualization a solution here?
The current architecture contains Sun servers with a 3DC (active, DR, replicate & backup) framework. Few applications hosted on main data center (say DC1) need to be virtualized and other DCs (say DC2 and DC3) also need to participate in server virtualization and use their resources for live traffic with minimal effect on BCP. The [...]

Site reference to justify Hyper-V in production environment
I’m thinking of proposing Hyper-V instead of VMWare to save cost. We don’t need advance features like VMotion or Live Migration, only the virtualization capability.
