Hi,

I’m actually a video producer who is working on a video project regarding issues/pet peeves around media storage, cloud computing and getting technical support from companies who provide cloud computer storage. I’m new to this world and so am exploring the issues that Storage Administrators come up against when dealing with getting technical support from storage companies like Cisco and EMC (and others).

Since I don’t know much about this world I am hoping you’ll be kind enough to allow me to pick your brain and let me in on some of your pet peeves when it comes to dealing with storage media, and more specifically getting technical support from companies when there are issues with storage management. Also, if you have thoughts or fears on the cloud computing model of storage. Please feel free to answer one or two of the questions (whatever your time will allow).

If you can suggest some resources/websites/other avenues that I could explore on this issue I would greatly appreciate it.

Thank you so much!

Question posted on behalf of Allen:

We have a very small Server room basically it’s a 10X10 closet, with cooling but no positive air flow, and no raised floor and the door is always closed.

Problem: a contractor in the Floor above us (16th floor) drilled an 8″ hole through the ceiling in our Server room/closet. A slab of concrete and tons of dust fell to the floor, filling the room with dust. It was 8 hours before we even knew this issue occurred.

Question: With the amount of dust in a confined space being circulated by the CPU and other internal fans in the 2 full racks that we have, could we have irreparable damage?
We have been told by the tenant’s insurance company that they will clean the equipment, but does this solve the problem?

Additional information: over 70% of the equipment is still under manufactures warranty. Will the manufactures cover any issues should they occur in the next year or two? Or should we just push the insurance company to replace equipment that is under warranty?

Thanks

Allen

Hi all – I’m working on a network design for a colo-based service site which will be load balancing both http and MySql (authenticated) services, and I’m looking at two possible solutions.

1) One of the Nortel Alteon content switches (low end)

or

2) The Cisco CSS-11052 content switch.

I’m somewhat familiar with the Alteon’s (having worked on them in the past).

Does anyone have experience with either – or better – both?

The main reason for considering the cisco at all is because it simplifies my purchasing picture – but it may also be workable for what I’m doing.

Opinions please?

Thanks,

I have just set up a shared generic line printer on one of our 2003 servers, and when I print a test page everything prints OK. However, when I map it as a network printer on another machine the print job is sent to the queue but stays there and nothing is printed. In the application log on the print server the following error is displayed:

Event Type:	Warning
Event Source:	LPR Print Monitor
Event Category:	None
Event ID:	2004
Date: 22/07/2005
Time: 12:58:54
User: N/A
Description:
Printer bdwageslp on host 10.20.5.10 is rejecting our request. Will retry until it accepts the request or the job is cancelled by the user.

I end up having to cancel the job. I’ve seen lots of support articles for this problem on NT4 Terminal server but not on 2000 or 2003.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hello,
I am trying to configure folder redirection. I want to redirect My docs and Desktop folders for just two users.I have configured the group policy for the domain under active directory users and computers. I have configured the two folders to be redirected to a shared folder on the network. I have made sure that the shared folder has all the permission (essentially it has no permissions anyone can do anything), but still the profiles dont seem to be redirected. I havent missed out a single step that has been mentioned on most of the tutorials i found online. Can someone please suggest where i may have gone wrong. To me it seems like a common mistake as i have seen similar problems with people online but no one seems to hav an answer. Please let me know if anyone knows whats happening.
Thanks.
