Once again I need to incorporate a mechanism which will issue a unique number as an object discriminator.

I’m sure we’ve all been there. – Incorporate a timestamp – quick and almost always unique, though this application will be busy, so the multiple ‘threading’ is attractive, Big problem is the length though, I only have 10 bytes.

Maybe pack the numbers into printable alpha numeric? use a radix of 36?

A record on a file (yawn) slow, need to Q for a lock, but a flexible way of doing it, and understandable by ‘users’

a data area – its a file really, but maybe quicker to operate? same locking issues

A User space? – are they going to be quicker than data areas?

So – anyone any ideas? I can manage the bit about making it unique across systems by adding a boxID prefix (Darn – another byte lost!)

While I’d like to go with timestamp. I’m thinking I’m forced to use a sequential ascending number, so any helpful info / discussion about access times would be good.

Thanks All

We noticed in a couple of programs where we were using timestamps that the rightmost three positions are consistently zero and never otherwise. I have tested this with even just a simple ILE RPG program that dsplys a %char(%timestamp()); and still only get zeros for the last three digits.

However…pulling a microsecond(current timestamp) in an interactive SQL session provides a value which has all six digits being used.

So, is this a limitation of RPG? Is there something else I am missing? Is anyone else using microseconds at all in RPG that can vouch for this ever using the last three digits?

Thanks in advance!!

Hi Experts,

I would like to mentione here i was trying to test one package and found the package has a procedure named SET() which hav UPDATE on Report table and INSERT on A_R table in same transaction

Both the above mentioned tables hav a tim_upt column which s given as systimestamp

and strange it was the second insert reflects the correct timestamp whereas the UPDATE (Report table) s not reflecting the tim_upt

Though it is like this..

procedure set(tim_upt — parameter varaible)

BEGIN

UPDATE Report
set different attributes,
tim_upt = systimestamp
where
some condition;

Insert into A_R (……,tim_upt)values(….systimestamp);

Exception
when others then
raise_appl_err(………);
END;

It compiles without any error ,on run of test for that set of tables it is not throwing any exception and but the 1st table is not reflected with time of update …

pls guide me on this
