I simply use the native backups (or LiteSpeed for larger databases) to backup to a network share on a NAS which is then replicated to a second newtork share each night.

No you can not place online data on a tape. Tape can only be used for backing up the database. The recommended solution would be to get slower less expensive hard drives and use them to host a second filegroup which you move the old data to.

EMC’s Clariion series has a good range of Fiber SANs to look into. The Navisphere interface makes for easy management. I’ve also heard that Compellent is an easy to use SAN which is also easy to upgrade because it is module based.
