RAID 5 offers what type of fault tolerance
RAID 5 is an array made up of three or more drives and allows for a single drive to fail. RAID 1 is an array mode up to two drives and allows for a single drive to fail. I cover the basics on RAID arrays in <a href=”http://searchsqlserver.techtarget.com/tip/0,289483,sid87_gci1262122,00.html”>this article</a>.

Record Recovery? How to recover records for taxes on a company computer for tax records on XP pro with no password…Backdoor/safe mode?
There are lots of questions about drive wiping on this website. See this <a href=”http://www.lmgtfy.com/?q=wipe+site%3Aitknowledgeexchange.techtarget.com”>search</a>. You can either change the password on the machine by using a tool like <a href=”http://home.eunet.no/pnordahl/ntpasswd/”>ntpasswd</a>, or boot with a bootable CD like <a href=”http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/”>ultimate boot cd</a>. There are other bootable CD’s like <a href=”http://www.knoppix.org/”>Knoppix</a> that can give you access [...]

iSeries backup encryption on LT04?
You can backup w/encyption (AME – Application Managed Encryption) to the internal SAS LTO4 drive in a Power6 520 type box, but you will suffer a 50% degradation in performance and a loss of data compression. This requires BRMS which generates and controls the KEY for the encryption – though you need to export it [...]

Backing up virtual SQL servers
I simply use the native backups (or LiteSpeed for larger databases) to backup to a network share on a NAS which is then replicated to a second newtork share each night.

Data erasing solutions?
EBAN is a enterprise version of dban and widely used open source data removal and destruction software. I would recommend DBAN if cost is an issue. DBAN will wipe the harddrive clear of any data on them by writing over the disk multiple times with 1s and 0s. I wrote a review on <a href=”http://analysisandreview.com/computer-hardware/how-to-erase-your-hard-drive/”>dban [...]

Backup procedure
A synthetic full backup uses incremental backups to create a full backup without using client resources and time to run a full backup. I think this is a very good idea. It will reduce the backup window while providing the same backup coverage. I don’t use this on my network, but it is something to [...]

SQL Server data purging
No you can not place online data on a tape. Tape can only be used for backing up the database. The recommended solution would be to get slower less expensive hard drives and use them to host a second filegroup which you move the old data to.

Need SAN upgrade suggestions
EMC’s Clariion series has a good range of Fiber SANs to look into. The Navisphere interface makes for easy management. I’ve also heard that Compellent is an easy to use SAN which is also easy to upgrade because it is module based.
