• How to backup a MySQL database daily

As of today, I have a 20 GB MySQL database that I backup daily using mysqldump. But there's one problem with it: When I don't take down the web server, it takes forever to backup (only takes 5-10 minutes when I take it down). Would there be a better way to do a backup for this?

We have several GBs of old data that's stored on a hard drive. If we were to unplug the drive and toss it into our library, would the drive deteriorate? We're curious because this is the first drive going into a library. Thanks so much!
