IT Security
Your question is too general for specific answers. Are we referring to physical security, network security. How secure do you want your network to be? Keeping in mind that more security means less accessiblity and ease of use.. The weakest link in any computer/network is the user.. do you for instance, only allow a user [...]

SCSI Boot with IDE, old CMOS
You don’t say which Adaptec controller is being used for the SCSI drive. Some have addins to the BIOS at startup for pre-emptive boot. With no IDE drive it wasn’t a problem, but with one added you got bit. Look for message during start up to access the adaptec controller, Usually ‘Ctrl-A’. As to getting [...]

Local Admin & passwords
This question can be boiled down to this: Is it costing you enough man-hours in support (because such and such user doesn’t have the right to so and so) to justify giving the users higher rights? For me, this almost always seems to be the case. Unless the user is only supposed to be accessing [...]

RAID 1 or RAID 5
If you have 4 disks why not do RAID 10. That’s a mirrored stripe-set. That is two RAID 0 (stripe) volumes configured in a RAID 1 (mirror). It gives you the speed of striping with the saftey of mirroring. I’ve got a couple of servers configured like that and it seemed noticably faster than RAID [...]

Need guidiance from pros already into the game
Well, first off… Congratulations for serving in our Armed Forces. You’ve asked a very broad question, so I’ll give you a broad answer first, and my specifics later. The first thing I can tell you is that very few of us have followed any sort of straight line to get to our respective positions today. [...]

nt backup
Is this Win 2k? Ntbackup only really works from the command line in 2000. From the GUI most times it just pretends to be backing up. I was quite surprised when in 2003 it actually backed up some data to a DLT. I’d never seen that work before.

Help with IBM ds6800 storage array. can’t assign storage unit to complex.
Hi there, We use a DS4300 but the principles are the same. Your 6800 comes with a central controller unit which must be cabled to the network. Look on the back of your 68000 for any Ethernet connections in addition to the fiber ones. Normally the initial setup is done via a laptop or PC [...]

What you need to do (by the letter and spirit) is to get into what is called “Release Engineering” or “Release Administration”. What it amounts to is isolation of the programmers from the production systems – with controls to make sure that what the programmers wrote is what you’re duplicating. The key steps involved here [...]
