We have 6 year old LTO tapes. We are trying to restore data from them using a LTO4 drive. We can not read the tapes at all. Not even the label. Can this be fixed? Any ideas? The drives are backwards compatible right?
Can you change the amount of drives in a raid 5 array? For example we now have 6 136 GB drives in our raid 5 array. Can we add one more drive to the array as either a hot spare or actually part of the array? Currently the array uses all 6 drives.
I am wondering if there are any applications available in the market which would allow me to protect my hard drive data. Are there any tools which would prevent a hard drive from being accessible if it was removed from a computer and plugged into another computer or a portable hard drive case? I realize [...]
how can insert values in array throw Scanner class or wrapper class?
Hi, I have BRMS for [strong]Backup Management [/strong]and[strong] [/strong]IBM System Storage TS3310 Tape Library for [strong]tape management[/strong].I have few questions regarding these 2 technologies: 1.Under normal circumstances the tape configuration is as follows: Description Status TAPMLB03 VARIED ON TAP03 VARIED OFF When I have to take the backup or restore,do I have to vary on [...]
I have an old Dell PowerEdge server that I want to convert to a large data storage server – nothing on it but archived data. The hard drive has been formatted to have about 70G on the C drive and about 130G on a different drive. BUT both drives are located on the same hard [...]
I was in a meeting the other day talking about our VMWare implementation and one of our Windows engineers brought up a comment that I wanted to throw out to everyone. He was told by a VMWare engineer that if you run Windows defragmenation on the virtual server while also are using de-duplication on the [...]
StarWind claims to turn any standard server into a fault-tolerant, fail-safe Windows iSCSI target SAN. Compared to EMC and Netapp products, where does it stand in term of performance & reliability (e.g. assuming new & stable server)? Has anyone deployed it on production? What kind of hardware do you use/recommend (e.g. Dell R410 etc)? Can [...]
I’m looking for a software that would allow arbitrary applications to share arbitrary data amongst themselves. Data suppliers could communicate with the service to “publish” what data they have available. Consumers can ask the service for what data is available. Consumers do not necessarily work in a “subscribe” model, because there may be a large [...]
I am looking at ways to improve performance of our databases. We have 4 large databases (ranging between 50gb and 200gb each) on a single SQL Server 2005 Cluster. Currently they are split 2 on one LUN and 2 on another. I am looking at ways to improve the IO performance of the databases as [...]
I need some serious help here. A client of mine had his old IBM netfinity 5500 server hit by lightning and the motherboard is toast. Problem is, he has no backup, and I’m trying to recover the data. The data sits on a 10 disk drive array, RAID 5. He has a spare Netfinity 5500 [...]
I have two identical hard disks in RAID1 array (no additional hard drives are available). There is a CD/DVD drive and USB. I need a solution for both Windows XP and Linux OS, but as single-OS, no dual booting. I’ve run into several hassles: Upgrading Linux kernel on a machine where one boots from [...]
I’m currently evaluating upgrade options for our primary Windows server storage volumes. I am trying to build in a solution in the upgrade to the problem of the time it takes to run CHKDSK on large, busy volumes mounted on Windows. In the days when storage volumes were up to a few hundred MB of [...]
I am trying to find who sells one or more of three types of high capacity storage systems. The first is to store 200 terabytes of security videos with the ability to retrieve a particular indexed video quickly. The second is a very high canacity RAID 5 storage system for off-site data storage of critical [...]
I currently have a three-year old ReadyNAS NV+ which offers 4 SATA drive bays with an implementation of RAID 5 across the drives. Each drive is 750GB, providing a virtual volume size of 2.25TB. When I set up this device, the largest drive on my network that I needed to backup was only 750GB. Now, [...]
I have been storing data on a removable device (flash disk) for a bit of time. Currently once I plug in the removable device to any of our PC’s the VDU is showing only a number of data while some data are not viewable, but now on the plug & play for the device it is registering that [...]
RAID 10 (aka: raid 1/0, raid 1+0) disk technology: and would like to know if anybody use it in production machines (in case: which advantages with respect to RAID5?). We know and already have RAID on (not only) production systems but so far only RAID1 and RAID5 were advised by our consultants: RAID10 (1+0 OR [...]
I am working on a plain java/J2ee project with Oracle 9 at the backend. The issue comes when I am querying the DB and more than 10000 records are retrieved. I can’t change the business logic much, since the code is developed by some other people and I’m not allowed to do so. Any tuning [...]
We are looking to replace our shared storage drive (10 workstations) with an online storage service. We access and update files regularly and would like to be able to access remotely as well as in office. Any advice on where to start would be greatly appreciated.
So far I understand that Amazon can be very easily scaled up and you’re likely going to have more uptime considering it’s a very large corporation that cares more about uptime. But what if I have a problem scaling up and I find a very good hosting business that is always up? Are there other [...]
