We have upgraded a number of Windows XP clients (from MSDE 1 to MSDE 2000) which interact with a clustered SQL server 7 system (running on Windows NT server) via transactional replication. Our problem is that these clients are connected over ISDN dial up lines and since the upgrade we have noted a significant increase in network traffic. Can anyone suggest what might be causing this? Are there any keep alive timers which need to be (re)configured or is there some other configuration required following the change? Is there such a thing as a best practice guide for employing SQL Server communications over dialup lines?

Ever since I installed Diskeeper Administrator 2009 on my PC (it runs XP Pro, svc pk 3), every time I print something, I get some “MSDE for AdminDB” pop-up that says “Setup has detected that your current SA password is set to blank. Please use sp_password to set a strong SA password and restart setup or set BLANKSAPWD=1 to ignore this vulnerablility. Refer to readme for more details. Setup will now exit.” Then when I click the OK button I get another pop-up that says “Please wait while Windows configures MSDE for AdminDB.” Then I have to click the Cancel button several times to make this all go away. I told the techs at Diskeeper about this but they weren’t able to solve it. I’ve since uninstalled Diskeeper Administrator on my PC but I still have this problem. Can anyone figure this out? (I don’t know anything about MS SQL Server or SA passwords, etc).

I know Windows Sharepoint services with Windows Server 2000 installs SQL
MSDE by default and the installation of same occurred successfully but
how come afterwards the SQL service icon in the system tray does not
have a green arrow on it instead it has a white filled-in circle and
when I launch it the server and services drop-down menus are blank?
When I try to start it a message comes up and says “This service control
action cannot be completed as no service has been selected”.
