I am trying to install this program on a Windows 7 OS, and I’m having a very difficult time. I have a 64-bit computer, but I’m trying to install the 32-bit version (x86) because I only have a 32-bit version at work, and I’m practicing at home what I eventually want to do at work and I want everything to be consistent.

Everything’s fine until I get to the Installation Configuration screen at the install. No matter what I do, whether I choose the default instance or choose “named instance” with MSSQLSERVER, I get validation errors saying the instance is already in use. I have no idea how to get past this, or what I’m doing wrong. There are instances at the bottom of the screen; it’s not blank, so I’m wondering if that is causing the conflict.

I tried to install sql server express 2008 with tools, so I’m wondering if that might have gone through and the instance is already there. Could that be possible? Even when I try to choose one of the instances under “installed instance”, I still get errors. I have no idea what any of this even means, let alone how to fix it. Could anyone please help? Thank you!

Could someone please help? Thank you.

I have a development machine and a production machine with identical databases, but I’m getting huge differences in execution plans when running a spatial query.

First, my development machine:
It’s SQL Server Express x64 with Reporting Services running on Win7 with 8Gb RAM.

Then my production machine:
SQL Server with Reporting Services running on Windows Server 2008 with 8Gb RAM (x86 though, so only 4Gb usable).

I have a table that contains about 3000+ records containing polygon coordinates. The database that holds the table is identical on both machines. A sample query I’m running on the dev machine executes in a fraction of a second but takes 11 seconds on the production machine. When I looked at the execution plans, I was surprised to see that they are completely different on the two machines.

The query is:

SELECT *
FROM USCounties
WHERE geography::STGeomFromText('POINT(-86.7535 33.6499)', 4326).STIntersects(Polygon) = 1

On the production machine the execution plan shows 3 steps:
SELECT Cost: 0%
Filter Cost: 97%
Clustered Index Scan Cost: 3%

But on the dev machine the execution plan is much more complex and includes things like “Nested Loops”, “Hash Match” and “Compute Scalar”. The indexes on the two machines look identical from what I can see and the data is identical. I would expect a performance difference just based on x86 vs x64, but I don’t understand the difference in execution plans…

I really don’t know much of anything about db optimization, any tips from the experts here?

- Dave

I’m developing a database application using VB.net. I would like to use SQL Server Express for the database so that my customers won’t have to purchase additional software along with the cost of my software. One of my requirements is that the application can use merge synchronization. Will merge synchronization work using RMO or some other method on installations where only SQL Server Express is available? A typical scenario would be where two or more PCs access the database on a network server while one or more notebook PCs (not always connected to the network server) have a local database that occasionally needs to synchronize to the network server. Thanks for your input.

I am having some trouble rebuilding the system databases on my SQL Server Express 2005 instance.

While I have had a total system failure, the backups have been good.

I have restored the operating system but obviously there are no SQL system databases present (they were open at the time of the backup). So now I need to rebuild them before I restore the backups.

The setup starts OK when I run the recommended rebuild string:

Start /wait setup.exe /qb INSTANCENAME=<InstanceName>
REINSTALL=SQL_Engine REBUILDDATABASE=1
SAPWD=<NewStrongPassword>

I get prompted to reinstall, and therefore overwrite the system databases. Then, just before the databases are copied to the DATA directory, I see the following status message:

     Running action to shutdown instance (Run As Normal User)

     RANU instance Shutdown in progress: MSSQL$INSTANCENAME

After 10 seconds I get the following error message:

     Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Setup

     The SQL Server service failed to start. For more information, see the SQL Server Books Online topics, “How
to: View SQL Server 2005 Setup Log Files” and “Starting SQL Server Manually.”

     Retry  /  Cancel

I can only “cancel” the process.

Any ideas why am I getting this? Obviously there are no system databases so the SQL Server service will not start (that’s why I’m rebuilding them).

If this is a Microsoft flaw then it’s a pretty major one as the only option seems to be the reinstallation of the entire application.

We have a small but critical application that is accessed by about 30 – 40 users on our network. We want to set up a SQL environment to run the database, but the application accessing the data is locally installed on each users machine. Users will access the db over our network using an ODBC connection. The db is currently just over 700Mb in Access. The application has excellent reporting tools, so we don’t need to run SQL reports directly against the db. We do want to be able to restore the db with the capability to include the transactions conducted since the last backup of the db occurred.

We are trying to determine whether we can use SQL Express, or whether SQL Workgroup or Standard is required. Can anyone offer some advice?
