This is kind of a strange question but is going to sleep a common thing that servers do in large server farms? Would it be less likely in a vitualized server?

I have Gateway (Win 7) and HP (Vista) laptops that sometimes will not return from sleep mode whether initiated manually or by power management. Any suggestions to fix?
