have about 20 Dell Dimension 4700’s that occasionally get Thermal issues
and shut down. Sometimes it can take up to 10 tries to get it to turn back
on. The machines are not hot and the problems show up intermittently of
about 20% of the computers. How can I fix or prevent this from happening?
It does not shut down in the middle of work but makes it difficult to turn
on causing workers grumbling.

i am going to be storing a windows xp sp3 based tower for a period of months while travelling. while the tower will be relatively secure, i’m unfamiliar with newer password cracking techniques, as i’ve never had to implement them. all sensative data on the machine is encrypted using fips algorithms on ntfs drive. i am hoping some of you can give me some tips to guard against a brute force attack against this machine. although it might sound a bit odd, this machine was the first i ever built from the ground up, per se. it’s kind of serves as a time capsule. although i’m aware of the fact that brute force attacks are not 100% preventable, i’d like to make it as difficult as possible. i have no experience with hacking myself, although i should, to prevent it from happening. any advise would be helpful.

With all the talk about security certifications and working in IT security being hot right now and in the future, I was wondering if it would make more sense to try and get the Security + certification before trying to get another IT certification such as the MCSA (Microsoft Certified Systems Administrator)? I’ve heard that most certifications (other than security) don’t mean that much anymore to employers, and that skills now beat having certifications. Also, I noticed for many other security certifications such as the CISSP, the requirements to take the test are very strict, in that you need to have 5 years of experience working in security. How does one get that experience if they’ve never specifically worked in security? What if someone was more of an IT Generalist, or IT jack-of-all-trades where they worked? I think I want to head in the security direction, but how do I do it? For the past couple of years, I’ve worked for a small firm where I am the only one that does all the IT stuff, and security was really never an everyday issue. My job title probably ties more closely to an IT Administrator or Systems Administrator. I appreciate any help and feedback. Thanks very much.

Hey there…

I am curretly running Exchange 2003 on W2k3 member server.

I installed Certificate Services and produced my own certificate and all works well with OWA.

I recently found out that SelfSSL is available but not quite as robust, which would probably be good.

I removed Cert services and was getting ready to install selfssl when one of my domain controllers started getting an error message about the cert being invalid. It happened last time I tried to uninstall cert services and I ended up rebuilding the domain controller to get rid of it.
I don’t want to do that again. So do any of you know how to remove certifcate services from the domain cleanly?
Also, is SelfSSL a good route to take for securing OWA?

thanks a mil…
