SBS 2003 to 2011 Migration Failure

Exchange 2010 , public folders
We migrated from SBS 2003 to exchange 2010 on a STD 2008 server.The migration went fine. We chose not to move the public folders. There are no copies of SBS 2003 available any more. Advice on upgrading SBS 2003 to Windows server 2008
Can we upgrade from a SBS 2003 to a full version of Server 2008? Is this the best method or should there be an intermediary server and install clean on Windows server 2008 and import the data? Is that possible?

My destination server gives an error stating that I never ran the migration tool on the source server or ran out the time frame. I have run the tool. and again, and again. same msg. What could be the cause.

replace an SBS 2008 server with another SBS 2008 server
