Very simple question, but not so simple of an answer. I would like to create a hidden recovery partition on all of my companies laptops so that if/when it gets destroyed in the field, when the user boots up, they insert a cd that says, basically “press 1 to restore your system to factory defaults” or “press 2 to exit”.
I would of course start with a clean install of windows, with all drivers and updates, they use that image as the one to restore.
We are on a no-budget budget for IT and are not looking at buying Acronis, or a license of Norton Ghost for every laptop we use.
We dont have a volume copy of XP, so that blows the idea of cloning an image out. Plus it has to be “push 1″ easy for the end users who may be in another part of the world. Currently we just keep the eom cd for each machine and use that, but its very time consuming to re-load it each and every time the users crash or break it.
I’ve found some advice, but they all point to PARAGON, or Ghost, or Acronis. Or they point here, then here, then here, then when it boots change this.
How do the system builders do it?
All clients running XP PRO SP3, with IE7 and the basic, JAVA, FLASH ADOBE reader and a VPN client.
We can either have the restore option start on multi-floppies, a boot CD or boot thumb drive.

Our Exchange 2003 server recently died and our latest working backup is several months old. We would like to restore to this backup to preserve the contacts and company public folders but we are concerned that doing so will wipe out all the recent messages and appointments in the Outlook clients when they connect. Will the server wipe out the recent messages on the clients, or will it repopulate the database with the more recent messages, or just ignore the recent messages in the clients’ all together?

Ultra 320 SCSI. Hard disks have been showing failure.

I tried to bring the hard drives ONLINE by FORCE option provided in the utility manager to configure RAID and got the hard drives up but couldn’t login to windows server 2003. It started showing NTLDR and NTDETECT missing messages. I also copied the files using recovery console with Windows Server installation CD but still no use. I still can not login to Windows with the message ntoskrnl.exe is missing or corrupt.

Can i get to the data without a backup?

Hi everyone,

I have taken a full backup of my old HD which was 160GB using norton Ghost v12. I have replaced this HD and installed a brand new 1tb hard drive into the system and did a system restore from my old C: which was 160GB. It fully restored all my programs and files, but the 1tb hard drive is reading as 160gb when I go into My computer then right click and view properties. I went to the BIOS and its reading as 1tb.

Any ideas as to how I can have the computer read this to be 1tb? I looked for drivers but researched and found that windows should have automatically detected system drives… wierd huh?? Hope someone out there has got an answer cus its bugging me. I surely dont want to start loading all my programs and files separately into this new 1tb HD.

Is there anything that I can do now that I have restored my 160GB to my 1tb HD, so that My computer detects a 1tb HD when I go into my computer and properties? I tried many things and spent hours and hours but cant get a solution to this.

Many thanks everyone for helping me with a step by step solution..

Tyrese

Hi, during a change freeze and after a full offline backup I am restoring this backup of my current production Fi-Co system onto another server to act as a system reference before making major changes to my live production system. My question is how do I prove to my business colleagues that the restored (reference) copy of Fi-Co is a true and accurate copy of actual production before I make these changes to my production system (i.e. how do I prove that the backup is good, and that the restored system and business data in both systems is identical).

I need to to this as part of a very constrained time window so quickest would be best. I have currently written an ABAP tool that will reconcile between production and my reference system, all business companies and Fi-Co ledgers over 8 an year period, and the current sign off being if they both come out the same after reconciliation then this is good proof that they are identical.

The problem is that it takes AGES to run which blows my change window and further outage is unacceptable to the business.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Many thanks.
