I Have a question concerning the scope of IT support. To what extent should the IT Department support vendor items purchased that perform a specific funtion for other departments. Specificaly items that require the support of the third party vendor.

For example we have a time and attendance application running on a dedicated PC the application recieves data from a finger print reading device which is connected to our network. Currently the HR department is responsible for registering users to the device and configuring the TA system based upon the HR policies. IT was responsible for providing the dedicated PC, supervising the software installation and providing network connectivity.

It is clear to me that if any problems occur related to the network and the PC IT would be responsible. What is not clear is that if the problem is with the vendor. Who should coordinate the resolution?

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I have a client that needs to record video and audio of sessions with their patients to become and maintain a specific certification. There will be eight professionals who need to do this. They would like to be able to record and move to DVD the sessions in the easiest way. The sessions are two people, one-on-one, across a table. Both people need to be seen and heard. A recording of the session 45 minutes to 1 hour long is to be made. They want a copy for themselves and a copy to be sent off to the certification body.

The problem is that none of us in the company is familiar enough with video gear to say, this is what we need to do this. We have been looking at various video cameras and such to see if we can find something that will fit their needs, but are really not sure how to proceed. The information we have dug up seems to fall short in several areas, and visits to local shops that sell this equipment have left us even a bit more in the dark.

Beside what I ahve outlined above, the process from start to finish needs to be as easy as possible, and does not need to be great art.

Right now we know we need a camcorder, a tripod to stand it on for the session–the recording needs to be as unabtrusive as possible–no getting up to change the media in the middle of a session–a computer with a DVD burner, or other method of creating an original (if the camcorder does not do this) and copy DVD.

Price is certainly an issue, none of the big bucks professional units ned apply, unless there is simply no ohter way to do it.

I’m open to all recommendations.

Also, I’ve sent this off to those familiar with compliance issues, particularly in the case of doctor patient confidentiallity, for any issues they may want to raise that we should be aware and bring to the attention of our client.

Thanks.

I have a small co. with a point to point wireless grid. I handle off site monitoring of gas nad oil flow. I have been overlaping my grid with new locations, and more to come. So I have been looking into new wireless Sys. I have made the choice to use All-In-One?360 Multi-Band/Multi-Mode Antenna WiMAX Ready. It will take a few to replace my hole grid. Now with my new antennas in place I have full cover of about 30 miles. Trying to stay with new techknowledge I will be useing 802.11 or 801.16. This will all so give me a chance to start up a WISP. So my question is…What do I need to start up? and what tpye should I use? If any could help me with this first step it would help me get started Faster.
Thank You,

This is the real commercial problem face by my company. Well, the reason I ask this problem is I salute and respect all of you as I believe all of you are as good as network solution company out there, or even better!!

Lets me rephrase the entire problem again.

Company expand so fast that the IT infrastructure is not fast enough to cater high volume of traffic; the initial design is not scalable. The number of new branch offices setup caused the company pay a high price in the leased line communication.
Salesman and management staffs dial into company networks via 56K modem to access the database server and update the sale order. All the branch offices access the internet via HQ and download email via the external POP3 email server.
Plan to revamp their IT infrastructure and reduce the leased line access cost. Here are some of the feedbacks consolidated from the various country managers and local salesman.
1) The email downloading and sending is very slow. They receive a lot of spam email this caused their individual mailbox quota use up very fast.
2) The sales and marketing departments need to access the internet to search for latest news and market trends. But the internet speed is very slow. These people are irritated by spywares and popup often.
3) The File transfer and Database access is very slow even in the local area networks.

I decided to put the real network cum equipment diagram of my current company as I believe this will at least give INSIGHT in solving the problem.

Please visit the website http://www.hgym.photosite.com
for the diagrams which are network diagram and equipment diagram.

Now I plan to improve the IT infrastructure to cater for future expansion up to 10 countries. SAP will be implement to automate the overall company operation. Also expect 3rd party to access their server to submit and view sale order.

I also plan to redesign the network so that it is high available, scalable and secure.

Any suggestion and opinion? What is your comment after looking at my network and its insfrastructure (from the diagrams on http://www.hgym.photosite.com )
Any improving needed?

My email is hunkgym@yahoo.com Of course you can reply here, preferable :>

Thanks again for your opinion!! Thank You!!
