I can’t make my recorder program ‘hear’ windows XP sounds!

how to monitor voice/instrument recordings to a laptop
just borrowed a dell latitude d610 laptop for a quick remote audio recording session.i tried to record via its built-in mic input using at first a microphone then a minidisc player via its headphone out through the laptops mic/line input. i tried recording using soundforge,adobe audition,and acid foundry but couldnt hear/monitor the signals. it recorded [...]
