  • Drive failed in RAID 5. Hotspare did not kick in.

One drive failed in a 6 drive raid 5 array. There was a hot spare but it did not kick in. It says offline. What needs to be done to return the array to full working condition? I would like a hot spare as well.

  • Are there such things as good reboots on client servers?

IBM has claimed that they have invested billions on their mainframe platform to reduce the need for reboots. EMC and Cisco appear to be doing the same for RAID storage and routers and switches respectively. Yet on client servers reboots are treated as commonplace events. How can both practices...

The specific pieces of info I am looking for are default settings for: Disk Order Raid 5 Parity Distribution, Parity Length, Controller-reserved sector information (Reserved from Start sector), Not sure if it makes a difference but it was originally a 4 Disk raid 5, but later RAID was expanded with...

How do I force a Sun x4200 with a LSI SAS1064 RAID controller to resync? mpt-status returns OUT_OF_SYNC for one of the drives. A power cycle didn't alleviate the problem. Does this mean the disk has failed?
