An above mentioned server was taken out of storage after 3 years. (storage was proper – sealed packaging&moisture absorbers)

[strong][/strong]Does not start: 2 of 5 raid disks show “failed”, both in RAID BIOS and LED’s on the front panel.

I tried swapping 2 failed drives with 2 good ones in other slots. I got
all 5 occupied slots show green “ok” LED’s. But, BIOS utility still
show same 2 slots as “failed”.

So:

can it be RAID controller’s fault? / i got 2 drives gone dead on shelf in airtight package? / i am missing something simple? / something else?

I have a Dell Precision 690 Workstation
with an LSI Integrated RAID controller.

I have a 2-disk RAID 0 (what LSI refers to as an
IS or Integrated Striping) volume.

Recently the motherboard was replaced (and the RAID
controller is integrated onto the motherboard).

Ever since the motherboard replacement, I get the
following error at boot time:

Dell SAS 5 Host Bus Adapter BIOS
MPTBIOS-6.12.02.00 (2006.12.22)
Copyright 2000-2006 LSI Logic Corp.

	Integrated RAID exception detected:
Volume (00:130) is currently in state INACTIVE/OPTIMAL
Enter the SAS Configuration Utility to Investigate!

I can temporarily resolve this problem by activating
the volume in the RAID configuration utility:

select SAS1068
RAID properties
Manage Virtual Disk
Activate Array
Y

But if the power is disconnected, then the same error recurs
on the next boot.

I am thinking that if I delete the volume and re-add it, then
the problem will go away, but I’m afraid I might lose all my
data if I do that. Does anyone know if that’s true?

Any help appreciated.

Thanks,

Roger

We have a mission critical robot on the production line that is run by 3 pc quality machines running NT4 workstation. They are referred to as A B and C It has crashed 2 times in the last year. Both times it was the motherboard on PC B. This machine runs 24×7. The IT department has not had much input into this machine until now.
This is what we would like to do.

Replace all three motherboards (They are currenly Pentium 2). The industrial motherboards only come in pentium 3.
Replace the operating system with a current one.
Mirror the harddrives for disaster recovery.

My question is: Because these machines do run 24×7, would it be better to use Windows 2003 and mirror the drives through the software. (Will 2003 standard run on pentium 3?) Or would it be OK to use XP and use a RAID controller. And if I do use a hardware solution, what is a good controller and harddrives to buy.
